2025 Brasileiros results: Porfirio shocks Pessanha, Wardzinski and Pato remain in Grand Slam hunt

View results and video highlights from the 2025 Brasileiros, which took place last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The dust has settled on another IBJJF major event, and the 2025 Brasileiros delivered plenty of thrilling moments. The event took place April 26 – May 4, with adult black belts competing on the final Saturday and Sunday.

Tayane Porfirio upsets Gabi Pessanha

While there was no shortage of significant and compelling moments, the most drama came in the women’s super-heavyweight division. Tayane Porfirio scored a stunning upset over Gabi Pessanha, snapping the young phenom’s nearly 200-match winning streak. Notably, the pair had met just one week prior at BJJ Stars, with Pessanha picking up a dominant submission victory.

This time around, though, Porfirio turned the tide in a performance for the ages. Porfirio pulled guard early, only to see Pessanha sit back on an ill-advised ankle lock. Porfirio then took top position to take 2-0 lead.

From there, Pessanha nearly swept back, but when the pair returned to their feet, it was Porfirio who scored the takedown to earn a commanding 4-0 lead. And while Pessanha would turn up the aggression in the contest’s closing minutes and nearly take her opponent’s back in the final seconds, Porfirio was able to defend the hooks and keep her advantage intact.

With the victory, Porfirio is now a three-time Brasileiros champion.

For her part, Pessanha won gold in the absolute division to keep her Grand Slam hopes alive, but the loss ended perhaps the most impressive run of dominance the sport has ever seen. Pessanha had won double-gold at each of the previous three Brasileiros and each of the last four Worlds.

Adam Wardzinski, Diego Pato remain dominant

On the men’s side, both Adam Wardzinski and Diego “Pato” Oliveira kept their 2025 Grand Slam hopes alive.

Wardzinski looked in top form, whether he was working from his trademark butterfly guard or employing his pressure passing game. He submitted respected veteran Gregor Gracie with a triangle choke, then 2024 Worlds silver medalist Vinicius Liberati before earning a close, 1-0 advantage victory over last year’s brown belt double-gold world champion Leo Ferreira in the final.

Considering his high submission rate and elite level of competition, Wardzinski has put together one of the most impressive IBJJF major runs in recent memory.

And in the men’s light-feather division, Diego Pato was nothing short of dominant en route to his first Brasileiros gold at black belt. The Art of Jiu-Jitsu product proved he’s much more than a leg locker, submitting Nathannael Jackson in the semifinals via armbar, then, in the division’s final, he took a commanding points lead before submitting Anderson Duarte with a rear-naked choke.

Pato hasn’t lost a gi match since the quarterfinals of the absolute division at the 2024 IBJJF Pans and looks well on his way to earning the Grand Slam in 2025.
