CJI 2: Day 1 results and video highlights

View the results and highlights from the first day of CJI 2, which took place on August 30, 2025.

The Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) returned to action for its second installment this Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. CJI 2 features an eight-team Quintet-style tournament that includes a number of the planet’s top pound-for-pound grapplers. The winning team takes home $1 million.

Also, four top women will compete in a tournament with a $100,000 cash prize on the line, and tournament organizer Craig Jones will square off with late-notice replacement Chael Sonnen in the main event. The full lineup of athletes competing can be viewed here.

CJI 2 day 1 results

Team New Wave vs. Team Americas

  • Luke Griffith (NW) vs. Pat Downey (AM) ends in a draw
  • Vagner Rocha (NW) vs. Elijah Dorsey (AM) ends in a draw
  • Giancarlo Bodoni (NW) def. Gavin Corbe (AM) via submission (rear-naked choke)
  • Taylor Pearman (AM) def. Giancarlo Bodoni (NW) via submission (heel hook)

Pearman picked up the biggest victory of his career with an outside heel hook over the two-time ADCC champion. Bodoni contested his tap, but after video review, mat-side judges ruled that he had, in fact, tapped.

  • Mica Galvao (NW) vs. Deandre Corbe (AM) ends in a draw

Team New Wave and Team Americas each scored one submission. As a tie-breaker, the mat-side judges’ score cards from each bout were tallied.

Neither team scored a decision. As a tie-breaker, the mat-side judges’ score cards from each bout were tallied.

  • Belal Etiabari (AU) def. Geo Martinez (10p) via submission (ankle lock)

In another bit of controversy, Martinez contested his tap, but mat-side judges ultimately ruled that he submitted.

Ben Coate

Ben has been involved with grappling, whether through wrestling or Brazilian jiu-jitsu, essentially his entire life. After wrestling throughout his childhood, Ben found Brazilian jiu-jitsu as a young adult and quickly fell in love.
