Euros 2020: Ffion Davies In The Openweight Final

The IBJJF European Championships Female Openweight division is nearly wrapped up as the final is set for tomorrow, Ffion Davies v Jessica Flowers. Both athletes have looked amazing on their route to tomorrow’s final, but Flowers will have a significant weight advantage over Ffion Davies and this will definitely present a challenge.

Davies’ first match was against Patricia Caiado where she scored an early takedown and quickly racked up a 10-0 lead on the scoreboard. While she had Caiado’s back, she transitioned to an armbar to get the finish before the halfway mark. Meanwhile, Jessica Flowers was getting past Magdalena Loska by transitioning perfectly from a Kimura to an Armbar and finishing the match with confidence.

In the Quarter-Finals, Davies put on another excellent display of technical Jiu-Jitsu against Charlotte Von Baumgarten. She went 11-0 up this time before securing Von Baumgarten’s back with a body triangle and finishing with a choke from there. Flowers enjoyed a huge weight advantage in her Quarter-Final when she took on Amal Amjahid, Amjahid put up a fantastic fight and took her all the way to decision, where Flowers won 6-0.

On her last stop before the final, Davies had her toughest match of the day against Larissa Campos. Campos took an early lead on points with a sweep before Davies returned fire with a sweep of her own to level the score. The match ended up going the distance with Davies winning by a single advantage. On the other side of the bracket, Vedha Toscana was giving Flowers a hard time as she took another match to decision. She ended the match having secured Toscana in a Straight Footlock from 50/50 but unable to finish it, this time winning 3-2.

Tomorrow will give us an epic end to the Female Openweight division, Ffion Davies v Jessica Flowers, Lightweight v Super-Heavyweight.
