FIght To Win 191: Gianni Grippo Suffers Upset Loss in Main Event

Fight To Win 191 took place on Friday, January 14, live from Miami, FL. In the main event, 2021 IBJJF no-gi world champion Gianni Grippo suffered an upset loss to Mauricio Gomez. The co-main event also saw an upset, as Enrico Cocco lost his Fight To Win middleweight title by split decision to Yuri Villefort.

Mauricio Gomez attacked Grippo early and often, attempting a somersault guard pass in the opening seconds before finding himself in a deep leg entanglement. For nearly four full minutes, Gomez attacked the inside the heel hook from the 50-50 position.

Grippo was eventually able to escape, but Gomez continued to find Grippo’s feet, racking up points with legitimate submission attempts. In the final minute, Grippo was able to pass Gomez’s guard to find a dominant position, but couldn’t mount any real submission offense.

Gomez was awarded the unanimous decision victory in a serious upset. Grippo was a five-to-one favorite.

In the co-main event, Yuri Villefort used constant passing pressure and a handful of slams to edge a split decision victory over defending middleweight champion Enrico Cocco. Villefort’s body lock passing kept Cocco on the defensive for much of the match, shutting down his dangerously flexible guard game.
