Garry Tonon drops weight class to complete 66 kg. division at ADCC World Championships

We are less than three months away from the ADCC World Championships, and the men’s 66 kg. division is now full. On Friday, the ADCC announced that returning 77 kg. ADCC medalist Garry Tonon will drop down to compete at 66 kg., making him the 16th and final competitor in that division.

A representative of New Wave Jiu-Jitsu and a longtime student of John Danaher, Tonon is widely considered one of the most entertaining grapplers in the world. In recent years, Tonon has focused much of his efforts on his professional MMA career with ONE Championship, competing in submission grappling just four times since the 2019 ADCC World Championships.

In Tonon’s most recent outing, he suffered a submission defeat against Tye Ruotolo at ONE 157. Watch that match here.

With Tonon moving down in weight class, he’ll avoid any potential match-up against his New Wave teammate and ADCC European Trials champion Oliver Taza.

Below is the current roster of athletes scheduled to compete in the 66 kg. division at the 2022 ADCC World Championships.

The 2022 ADCC World Championships take place on September 17-18 in Las Vegas, NV.
