Top Ten Slow Masticating Juicers
We all know that the key to an overall more healthy diet is to pack in extra fruits and vegetables. But there are only so many you can physically eat in a day, and let’s face it, no matter how healthy it is, some fruit and veg out there just doesn’t cater for all palates. This is just one of the reasons why juicing is so great – it enables you to extract all the good stuff, such as vitamins and minerals, and turn your five-a-day into a great-tasting juice.
If you’re new to the idea of juicing, it can at first be a little overwhelming, as there are seemingly infinite options available. Really, the two main groups used to define juicing machines are centrifugal juicers and masticating juicers. Both types of juicer have their advantages, and the type that’s best for each person really depends on their individual juicing needs.
Centrifugal juicers are great for extracting juice and removing fibre, can be loaded up with fruits and dense vegetables, spin at a rate of 3,000 to 10,000rpm, and usually vary between $40 to $150. They’re ideal for casual juicers and those who are new to the idea of juicing.
Masticating juicers, whilst also ideal for extracting juice, are also capable of chopping ingredients, and grinding powder. As well as being suitable for use with fruits and dense vegetables, leafy greens like kale and spinach can be thrown in too. After juicing, there’s far less foam left over than when using a centrifugal juicer. When finished, leftover pulp comes out dry, meaning they’re capable of extracting more juice overall. They spin much more slowly, at a rate of 40 to 100rpm. Masticating juicers are a perfect purchase for those who are passionate about juicing, and of course, kale lovers.
Another important difference between the two is that because the masticating juicer spins so much more slowly, the fruits and vegetables are less exposed to oxygen than with a centrifugal juicer, meaning leftover juice will last longer. Less exposure to oxygen means less oxidation, and therefore, juice that tastes fresh for longer.
Getting into the habit of juicing is great for both body and mind, for a whole host of reasons. Not only can it provide a large influx of vitamins and minerals without all the added bulk of fiber, but the absence of fiber actually enables the body to absorb all this goodness much more quickly. This can bring health benefits for pretty much everyone, but for athletes in particular, it boasts a pretty unique advantage: if before a training session, you sip on a healthy juice that’s filled with nitric oxides (from foods such as beets), it will help your blood vessels dilate and improve your performance. Additionally, you’ll have all the benefits of the calories, vitamins, and minerals, without the bulk of whole foods weighing you down whilst training.
Of course, whilst juicing can be wonderfully beneficial, it’s not without its limitations. It’s important to remember that fiber is an essential nutrient for both adequate digestion and a healthy cardiovascular system, so don’t just get all your nutrients from juicing alone. Depending on the juice, it can also be easy to stack up calories very quickly. This is especially true if your juices consist of mostly sweet fruits, such as apples and oranges. This isn’t so much of an issue with vegetable-based juices, but something to keep in mind.
When done right, juicing can be a great healthy habit to adopt into your lifestyle. So, here is a list of our top ten juicers for 2021.
