Mikey Musumeci plans voluntary drug testing to prove natural status

Reigning ONE submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci plans to undergo regular voluntary drug testing.

Mikey Musumeci has long been a vocal critic of steroids and PEDs in jiu-jitsu. He is now taking that stance a step further and has announced plans to take regular, voluntary drug tests to prove he does not take PEDs.

Musumeci posted about his plans on his Instagram story.

As the current ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion, Musumeci – like all other ONE Championship athletes – is subject to in-competition drug testing. However, as he explains above, some athletes who use PEDs may find a way to pass these tests.

The New Jersey native has previously railed against the widespread use of steroids in BJJ and posted his drug test results. In May of last year, ahead of his successful world title defense against Osamah Almarwai at ONE Fight Night 10, he stated:

“All these guys just injecting into their butts. You know how I feel about steroids. That’s why I love ONE Championship; they test athletes. At least I don’t have to deal with these guys injecting steroids all year; they have to at least cycle off a month to fight me. So that’s nice. And, again, the impact on generations if you take steroids. What are you telling the next generation? Oh, you have to take steroids to be a champion. So now you’re telling the next generation to take drugs? Is that a great impact you’re having on others? No, it’s a s*** impact. Like, what are you doing? I’m just really against it.”

Musumeci is widely recognized as one of – if not the best – American-born BJJ competitor of all time. He is a five-time IBJJF world champion, a former Who’s Number One champion, and has been the ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion since September 2022.

The 27-year-old is not currently booked for his next appearance in ONE.
