Featuring four, five-man teams of grapplers, the event will see a number of the planet’s top competitors going head-to-head in submission-only matches.

Check out the current team line-ups below.

The B-Team Bulls

  • Craig Jones
  • Nick Rodriguez
  • Nicky Ryan

  • Jay Rodriguez

Several names immediately stand out, many of them on the early favorite B-Team squad. A two-time ADCC silver medalist, team captain Craig Jones has an aggressive, submission-oriented style that has historically served him very well in the short, submission-only matches he’ll see at Quintet. And, as a frequent light heavyweight competitor, he’ll hold a size advantage over many potential opponents.

Joining Jones on The B-Team will be fellow two-time ADCC heavyweight silver medalist Nick Rodriguez – perhaps the most dangerous grappler on any team. Also, keep an eye on ADCC veterans Nicky Ryan and Jay Rodriguez, as well as young phenom Jozef Chen.

Team 10th Planet also boasts a number of elite competitors, including veteran black belts Richie and Geo Martinez, as well as recent ADCC veteran PJ Barch and heavyweight submission hunter Kyle Boehm. On paper, the 10th Planet squad looks to be The B-Team’s top competition.

For its part, Team Polaris features several top grapplers who could make waves. Among them are explosive takedown artist Owen Livesey, ADCC veteran Santeri Lilius, and elite UK leg locker Jed Hue.

Finally, Team Sakuraba consists of some of Asia’s best grapplers, including legendary MMA fighter Kazushi Sakuraba. Joining him will be former Carpe Diem representative, current B-Team member, and ADCC veteran Haisam Rida.

What is the Quintet format?

Quintet is a team-based grappling competition. Each team consists of five grapplers who must cumulatively weigh under a certain limit. Before each head-to-head team matchup, both squads will set their order of competitors.

Grapplers from each team then square off in submission-only matches, regardless of what either competitor weighs. If a submission occurs, the winning grappler stays on the mat to face the opposing team’s next competitor. In the event there is no submission, both grapplers leave the mat and each team puts forth its next athlete.

The team with the most submissions wins the team matchup.

How to watch: Quintet 4 takes place on Sunday, September 10, and will air live on FloGrappling (subscription required) beginning at 5:00 AM ET.
