While Mikey Musumeci came into his openweight submission grappling contest with longtime MMA veteran Shinya Aoki as a considerable favorite, few could have predicted exactly how the match ended up playing out.
The two met on Friday at ONE Fight Night 15 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Musumeci opened the bout by offering his leg for a takedown. Aoki obliged, and Musumeci wasted no time in looking for K-guard entries on his largely defensive opponent. After about three minutes of action, the American was able to enter deep into a leg entanglement where he latched onto an ankle, let the heel slip in front of his torso, and torqued on the leg in a twisting motion.
In short, Musumeci used a perfectly applied Aoki lock – the very submission named after Shinya Aoki – to submit Shinya Aoki.

The victory netted the 27-year-old ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Champion a $50,000 performance bonus and extended his undefeated record in ONE to 6-0 with 4 wins by submission.
