The black belt divisions were loaded with top talent, including returning world champions, highly regarded young phenoms, and everything in between.

Ffion Davies and Roberto Jimenez claim absolute gold

Perhaps the tournament’s most impressive performances came from Ffion Davies and Roberto Jimenez, both of whom won gold in the absolute divisions.

A 2021 lightweight no-gi world champion and the current 60kg ADCC champion, Davies put in a double-gold performance over the weekend to add to her gi world title this year, further strengthening her claim to the world’s top pound-for-pound female grappler.

After taking out top names like Elizabeth Mitrovic and Maria Malyjasiak, Davies shined in an entertaining match against middleweight gold medalist Gabi McComb. Davies found herself in a couple of difficult spots early in that match but roared back with a takedown that led to back control and, moments later, the rear-naked choke finish.

And on the men’s side, Jimenez earned his first major IBJJF black belt title with a dominant run through the absolute division. In the quarterfinals, he took out multiple-time heavyweight ADCC Trials winner Heikki Jussila, and in the semifinals, Jimenez defeated reigning Pans no-gi champion Francisco Lo

The final of the men’s absolute division was one of the most action-packed matches of the year, as Jimenez squared off with ultra-heavy gold medalist Roosevelt Sousa. Sousa found success early, attacking Jimenez with an armbar that appeared to be fully locked in. The Ecuadorian would escape, though, and storm back moments later to secure Sousa’s back and sink in a one-arm rear-naked choke for the finish.
