Video: Braulio Estima Reveals Invisible Mechanics Behind a Proper Armbar

As all jiu-jitsu practitioners know, the devil is in the details. Take, for example, a basic armbar. The technique could be applied 90% perfectly, but if one minor finishing detail is off, the entire technique is off. In a recent video, jiu-jitsu legend Braulio Estima addresses one key “invisible” concept behind the armbar.

As he explains, the key to finishing an armbar is isolating and controlling the opponent’s shoulder. If the opponent is able to move his shoulder, he can relieve pressure on his elbow. With the shoulder controlled completely, the armbar comes on much quicker and with less resistance.

Grapplers would be wise to listen to Braulio Estima’s advice, as he is an incredibly accomplished competitor. He was a weight and absolute ADCC champion and multiple-time IBJJF world champion. He is now retired from competition and one of Gracie Barra’s top instructors.
