WATCH: Mark Zuckerberg Compete in His First Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament
What the Zuck! Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wins gold and silver at his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament.
With more and more celebrities getting into BJJ, it is great to see some of those giving competition a go; and one person we all never expected to get onto the jiu jitsu competition mats was Zuckerberg.
Recently we saw the billionaire train MMA in the Metaverse with UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkonovski last year and he looked sharp for a beginner. Zuck has certainly been sharpening his skills for a while, so much so, he now feels confident enough to compete in BJJ. Although only still a white belt, it will be interesting to see if he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Tom Hardy , Tinie Tempah and Mario Lopez, and competes at coloured ranks (when he gets there).
Competing at BJJ Pro Tour, Zuckerberg managed to win his frist No-Gi match via points after securing a takedown early doors. He began trying to get neck grips before getting a double leg takeodwn and ending up in his opponents closed guard. Whilst in the closed guard, his opposition tried to secure an arm-in guillotine but Zuckerberg managed to escape, he then tried to pass the guard and ended up in top half guard before the match ended. For those who think “why do we care about celebrities doing jiu jitsu?” because it brings more eyes to the sport (that wouldn’t necessarily be looking at it/know about it), which in turn, increases the money brought to the sport; meaning higher-level athletes will be able to get paid properly like athletes in other sports do. Celebrities starting jiu jitsu and competing is a good thing for the sport, and BJJ is the only sport to do this; where the average competitor could find themselves sparring against a world-renowned billionaire or a Hollywood a-lister. That is awesome.
